Introduction to Backyard Birding: A 5-Part Series

ENDED Class #1: The Basics of Bird Identification: February 19th, 6:30 - 8:30pm 🔹 Learn the essential techniques for identifying birds by sight and sound, including size, shape, plumage, behavior, and how to effectively use binoculars. We'll equip you with a simple, step-by-step process for confidently naming the birds you see.

ENDED Class #2: Identifying Ten Backyard Birds: February 26th, 6:30 - 8:30pm 🔹Put your newfound knowledge to practice! We'll focus on ten common backyard birds, delving into their unique characteristics and behaviors, so you can easily recognize them in your own yard.

Class #3: Designing a Backyard Bird Paradise: March 5th, 6:30 - 8:30pm 🔹 Discover how to create an inviting habitat for birds in your own backyard. We'll explore the best plants, feeders, and water sources to attract a variety of species and turn your yard into a birdwatcher's dream.

Class #4: Field Trip to a Backyard Bird Oasis: March 9th, 10am - Noon🔹 Join us for an exciting field trip to a local backyard bird oasis! Observe birds in a thriving habitat, learn from experienced birders, and get inspiration for your own backyard sanctuary.

Class #5: Guided Birdwalk at the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove: March 16th, 8:00 - 10:00am 🔹 Sharpen your birding skills on a guided birdwalk! We'll explore a local natural area, putting your identification skills to the test and learning even more about bird behavior and conservation.

Meet Philip Witmer:

Phil Witmer is an avid birder and conservationist with over 35 years of birding experierence. He is currently the vice-president of Bird Town Pennsylvania, helping to build bird-friendly habitats in Pennsylvania municipalities. Mr. Witmer has also served as a board member of the Bucks County Audubon Society; president of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, one of the oldest birding clubs in the country; and as an advisory board member of the Audubon Pennsylvania State Office.

Mr. Witmer has devoted a great deal of time focusing on the conservation of birds, the forces driving their decline, and what we need to do to save them. In addition to leading conservation-focused bird walks and lecturing on a variety of related topics, Mr. Witmer teaches a backyard birding course in the Main Line School Night program.
